Can beginners attend classes?
Beginners are welcome! Divine Power Yoga is open to all levels. Beginners are encouraged to pace themselves and trust their own bodies. Just as no one runs a marathon in one day but trains over time, in time you’ll find that you are stronger, more flexible and able to do more in your practice.
Will class be challenging for me?
Yes. And so we encourage you to listen to your body and take class at your own pace. Your first classes may be challenging and you may experience some muscle soreness. This is normal when trying something new and it won’t last long.
What if I’ve never done yoga? Or I can’t touch my toes?
You don’t need to be physically flexible or physically strong. You just need an open mind and a willing attitude. Focus on breathing, moving and respecting where you are in your practice. Yoga can expose physical, emotional and spiritual imbalances. The more you practice, the more you come into balance.
The more you practice, the more tension will release and your range of motion will naturally increase.
What if I am pregnant? Can I still practice yoga?
We encourage you to discuss this with your physician. Yoga is a relatively safe practice but it is always wise to get your doctor’s permission before starting something new. There are some poses like inversions and lying on your belly that are contraindicated in pregnancy but modifications are available.
What style of yoga is this? How does this yoga differ from other yoga?
This yoga is based on intuition rather than tradition. It is based on the teaching of Baron Baptiste and has roots in Hatha, Iyengar and Bikram yoga. It is called Power Vinyasa. Vinyasa means flow and in this practice we connect the flow of postures with breath to create a moving meditation. The power comes from within as you access it through your practice.
Why is the room warm?
The room is warm to loosen your muscles and bring ease to your practice. This also encourages sweating which releases toxins and frees you to take your practice to a deeper level, all the way to the edge! Drink 8-10 ounces of water 30 minutes before practice and then small sips of water as needed during the practice.
How often should I practice?
The more you practice the more you will see results. We encourage yoga as a discipline and a way of life on and off your mat so the regularity is important. For life-changing results, practice 4-6 times a week but even a regular practice of 2-3 times a week will bring deep transformation over time.
What do I need in order to practice?
A yoga mat, comfortable clothes that allow you to move and some water. Straps and blocks are often available separately or in kits with a yoga mat and can be useful but are not absolutely necessary. Blocks and straps are available at the studio for your use. Mats and towels can be rented for a nominal charge. You won’t need your phone during practice so please silence it and leave it in a safe place.
